1.社区Suggestions on Improving
Communication among the Community Members
Communication plays a significant role in our daily life, especially in modern society. Since we get along with other people in every field, we must learn how to communicate with people effectively.
Effective communication should be planned carefully. First, speak slowly and briefly in order
to
make
ourselves
understood
completely. Second, express ourselves in all sincerity and with warmth. Third, concentrate on what the speaker says and appreciate his point of view. Moreover, we should give positive feedback by nodding or smiling while listening. Fourth, place ourselves in the place of others.
We live in a world where people need depend on each other, so we must get along well with each other, especially in our community. I think we should improve communication among the community member.
First, we should help each other. Second, we should care for each other. Third, we should get together in our spare time. Finally, we should pay a visit to our neighbors. We should often chat with each other.
As far as I am concerned, I communicate with other people in a positive way whether I'm in a merry mood or not. And I often express my own opinion genuinely and sincerely. In a word, we must do our best to deal with the relationship between people. 2. The Most Valuable Tradition of My Family
There is a saying that happy families are the same while unhappy ones have their own misfortune.
#p#分页标题#e#In fact,I don‟t agree with it exactly. I hold the opinion that every happy family has its own character. And this is just like that different families have different traditions. Maybe you are eager to know whether my family is a happy one or not. Unfortunately,I will not tell you anything about directly.
What I am going to show you is just the tradition which I cherish most of my family. When I was young,my mother often attributes a lot of housework to me,such as washing dishes, cleaning rooms and so on. Once I was so mad that I said:” Hey,mum! Why do I have to do such chores. It is for girls but I am a boy!” “Oh,dear! You should be independent and both man and woman have the duty to do the work.” Mother said tenderly. “But why father didn‟t do it with me? He is older than me .Every time when I was busy doing the cleaning,he was watching TV. That is unfair. “ I complained .” Because your father has done such things since he was a child. And now he gets married,he doesn‟t have to do so. If you don‟t know how to du such things by yourself, you can never find a wife. Then you have to do the chores for your whole life.” “That is absolutely right. I can „t think out anything that is more shameful than without a wife.” Dad said seriously. From then on,I regarded independent as the most valuable quality of my life.
Of course,it is so easy for me to find such a talk is just a funny joke. But it is too late to discard the quality of being independent as it has been a habit of mine. And besides,I do have benefited a lot from the so-called independence. You never know what you will get, until you really do. I think that is what independence implies and so as what the tradition of my family holds.
Factors Contributing to the Success of
As we all know, Bill Gates is the richest man in the world and rightly should have in their marketing consultants committee the best in the world. Bill Gates is the head of the software company Microsoft and one of the world's wealthiest men. Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft in the 1970s, though Allen left the company in 1983. Gates oversaw the invention and marketing of the MS-DOS operating system, the Windows operating interface, the Internet Explorer browser, and
a multitude of other popular computer products. Along the way he gained a reputation for fierce competitiveness and aggressive business savvy. During the 1990s rising Microsoft stock prices made Gates the world's wealthiest man; his wealth has at times exceeded $75 billion, making Gates a popular symbol of the ascendant computer geek of the late 20th century.
It is widely believed that some people are born lucky and successful, because they possess high intelligence. But this is not true. High intelligence is not equal to success. Success lies in not only the intelligence factors but also the non-intelligence factors. Non-intelligence factors are at least as important as intelligence factors, if not more than the latter. Success is built upon tremendous amount of study, practice and devotion. In addition, having a definite goal and knowing what to do next become more important. In fact, researchers have evidence that an intrinsic passion for one„s work is a key factor for success. According to my own experience, during our college years, having a good study habit is also important. Higher marks can„t be gained by putting in more hours. Efficiency in study can help us learn more.
Therefore, I think success is brought about both by innate intelligence factors and by non-intelligence factors.
An Open Letter on Academic Integrity in China
In the illustration provided, authors of what should be unique articles peer over at their colleague‟s work. Plagiarism in academic studies is becoming a major problem worldwide, perhaps students are looking for inspiration, but more likely, they are stealing ideas and using these ideas as their own. It appears from this pictures that everyone is guilty of this crime. There is no start or finish to the cycle of plagirism.
Academic plagiarism is a problem that is not limited to one or two schools in the word.
One can only imagine that some form of academic is present everywhere. This process can occur innocently enough. One writer is looking for information on a certain topic and does not cite his work properly, the original author is forgotten, and credit is not placed where it is due.
I believe that this issue is a very serious problem
in
universities
today.
The
administration should do everything they can to stop plagiarism. This could include lecturing students on how to properly quote references, and also raising the penalities for those who are found guilty of plagiarism. 5.财富.幸福The Relationship between Wealth and Happiness
Which is more important ,health or wealth? This problem have brought hot debate. Wealth has always been what some people long for. It is true that most of them try to acquire wealth by means of honest labour. Their efforts contribute to the welfare of the society and at the same time to the accumulation of their wealth, and hence to their happiness.
#p#分页标题#e#There‟s no doubt that wealth brings happiness, especially in the modern society. But there‟re exceptions when wealth doesn‟t go hand in hand with happiness. Wealth may tempt weak-willed persons to be addicted to harmful habits, such as drug-taking and gambling, and result in their own ruin. Besides, a person may lose his even some government officials who take advantage of their positions to take bribes from the people turning to them for help. All these will bring about the negative effect of wealth if we don‟t take a proper attitude to it.
Different people have different views. Some people think that health is more important than wealth, money can't buy a healthy body. If people are not healthy, they can't work or study well. Health is the most important thing in the world, they think. But some people disagree with them ,they think wealth is the most important thing .without it ,people can't
do anything. Although it can't buy health, but if people are ill, It can buy the medicine .wealth can also help people lead a easy life .
I think, the first wealth is health .Once health is lost, it is no use having a lot of money. As far as I am concerned, I love wealth, but I value health more. Without health money becomes meaningless. no one agrees that a wealthy person without good health can be happy. So, just do our best and keep fit. On no account can we identify wealth with happiness. I also believe that one should never reckon only on wealth to achieve happiness .
Gender Discrimination in Job-Hunting
Recent years, more girl students on the campus perform as excellently as boys, some even superior, however, when they venture into the complicated society, they find themselves faced with many things different. Among them is sexism at work. It begins with the job interview. More vacancies are open only to males. Sometimes, females will be rejected just because of their sex. When females are lucky enough to be employed by a company, Women may do no less work but earn much less than men. Besides, women also hold less hope to be promoted. Unfortunately, they will barely have chances to display their talent. Eventually, only a few women succeed in winning high positions as well as high salaries. Common situation is that women are reduced to low positions and thus paid
In a society where human rights are strongly emphasized, it's terrible to see sexism demonstrated in almost every aspect of human life. All in all, equality between sexes is badly urged. Everybody, especially the victim of sexism at work, is looking forward to being treated equally.
Modern Technology : Convenience or Problem?
The rapid development of science and technology has brought about great changes to human life. Nowadays, more and more hi-tech tools, such as calculator, computer, etc, appear in our daily life. We use them wherever and whenever we are, so that our life becomes easier and more comfortable than before.
However, does anyone think about what problems science and technology have caused to happen in this world? To some degree, it's more serious than that we consider. We human indeed use them to improve our living standard, but on the other hand, we are becoming lazier, more reliable than we used to be. All day long those hi-tech products accompany us, then we have either no space or time to think, as well, communication between each other decreases, and what takes place of it is the huge indifference and gap among human. the disadvantages about this development should not be neglected .Some of scientific inventions have even caused great harms or disasters to mankind. For example, advanced technology can be easily manipulated by irresponsible persons. Besides, we will be too dependant on it. When technology fails, we are helpless. Sometimes, it affects our health and life styles. The chemicals may be hazardous). What's
worse,
Science
and
technology may even destroy our simple and healthy life. In addition, the appearance of new technology may invade our privacy. To sum up, humans must be alert against the possible harm while enjoying the benefits from them.
Is failure a good teacher? Everybody will have failure. Everyone know ,failure often accompany with us in our common life. No matter what we do,we all can not say we must be success. Because anything is not plain sailing.
The failure is a successful mother, if there is no failure, that will not have results to show an achievement. Really, the successful man is
very happy, they own fresh flowers, applause. But the person, who fail, own of only have lonesome with unfrequented. In fact, we should go to more honorific is those person of[with] failures. Because, there is failure, just
#p#分页标题#e#have results to show an achievement. Fail don„t mean you is a for failed, fail to just mean you haven„t succeeded; Fail don„t mean you a have no become, fail to mean you get experience; Fail don„t mean you are a stupid person who don„t know to improvise, failing to mean you have Attic faith; Fail don„t mean you have to has been suppressing not and quickly, failing to mean you take pleasure in trying…
In my opinion,I think failure is the footstone and catalyst of the edifice of success. If you never lost it,and always get it easily, and then you will not cherish what you get and own. It is true that failure is an important factor toward success. The way to success is full of various difficulties and obstacles. Many important inventions or discoveries were achieved after hundreds of failure. And only those successes which have been achieved after many failures are really valuable and praiseworthy. This is the failure, precious failure.
An Open Letter on Death Caused by Overwork
Hardworking is the essential way to live a happy life. So through hundreds of years, hardworking and selfless dedication have always been a traditional Chinese virtue. But when suffering the stressful life, people always ignore the basic purpose of working. Along with the hyper-competitive society, workers have to shoulder overload of physical and mental labors. This kind of work does great damage to workers health. Especially in recent years, the phenomenon of over-working death appears repeatedly. The problem of over-working death is common to all societies. Many developed countries have lay down rules about this
problem. In China, however, the concept of over-working death is totally a new word and there are no laws on this phenomenon. Our economy develops fast but it also brings about many sharp problems that need to be solved urgently. For example, the study about over-working death is almost blank. So our scholars have to do more research on this problem, make the rules and laws of over-working in other countries as a reference, then adapt them to our society. The government should do more to perfect our legal system so that we can protect the basic rights of our workers. Work and play
Work and play do not contradict each other; in fact, they complement each other. They are two important parts in people's life, but some times they are contradictory, whether we can balance them has much to do with our success.
As the saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” A life burdened with work leads you nowhere, for you would get tired and bored with your daily routine work. On the other hand, proper recreation will relieve the tension and discomfort of our monotonous life because it offers you various ways to let out your pent-up emotions. What I usually do to relax after school is jogging and seeing movies. Usually I don‟t spare time for exercise, but I value the physical education class at school. Jogging several rounds in the field certainly relieves the day‟s pressure. On weekends, I‟ll catch the morning movie for my visual enjoyment. I feel revived and energetic for another week‟s work-load.
Work and play are two important parts in people's life, but some times they are contradictory, whether we can balance them has much to do with our success.
Some people think that we should do more work, because everyone has a limited life, and we should make as many contributions as we can to society. Besides, we can acquire
more knowledge and gain more experience by hard work, which will help us a lot later in our life.
Others believe that we should spare enough time for play. There is a saying that all work and no play makes John a dull boy. Play makes people feel relaxed and free them from the stress of work.
In this sense, it is also beneficial to our health. So if we don't play, we can't work well. In my opinion, we should do more work when we are young be cause we are energetic, and we can spend more time playing and enjoying our life when we become aged. Of course, we should never overdo things and never indulge ourselves with play.

unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C)
and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on
the Answer Sheet.(30%)
Passage One
Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:
Container gardening is especially adapted to contemporary living. Plants in containers display great variety of form and texture. They can be used to create instant indoor gardens; they can be moved from one home to another and they can be moved outdoors in the summer and indoors during the cooler months.
Space is not a problem. Container gardening can be conducted in a single pot on a table or windowsill, in a more elaborate room divider, or in a built-in planter.
Just as there are many kinds of plants, there are many kinds of containers. Plants can be grown in any container that will hold a growing medium. The choice ranges from the common clay pot to cans, jars, boxes, baskets and tubs.
Most people select containers for both their practical and “esthetic qualities.” These include cost, availability, weight, strength, durability, attractiveness, and decorative and sentimental value.
#p#分页标题#e#The size and shape of the container should be consistent with the plant's size and shape. Tall, tapering plants are more attractive in tall, relatively narrow containers. Short, compact plants appear more at home in shallow, wide containers.
Particularly important considerations for good plant growth are the volume and depth of the container, and some provision for drainage. Containers that have drainage holes in the bottom for removal of excess water are best. Water-tight containers are difficult to manage; excess water will accumulate at the bottom of the container and injure plant roots by excluding oxygen.
Container volume and depth become critical in relation to the quantity of available water and nutrients.
Besides the right kind of container, some fundamental requirements for plant growth must be provided. Plants need light, water, nutrients, and a satisfactory temperature range.
Light is the most critical requirement. The levels of all the other requirements are adjusted in relation to the amount of light that plants receive. When plants don't have enough light, they grow slowly and become tall and thin; it becomes difficult to avoid overwatering them. Plants are easier to maintain in good condition when their light requirements are met.
11. This article is primarily about _______.
A) caring for indoor plants
B) growing tropical plants
C) making containers for plants
D) choosing appropriate containers for indoor plants
12.The expression
A) size and shape B) drainage and light
C) attractiveness and decorative value D) availability only
13. Many people believe that tall plants need_______.
A) extra water B) more nutrients
C) more sunlight D) enough warmth
14. The author implies that ________.
A) plants in containers have more variety of form
B) plants can drown if they are given too much water
C) most plants should be placed on windowsills during winter months
D) some plants are particularly fit for container gardening
15. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A) vegetables are easier to grow than flowering plants
B) plants generally grow slowly when kept indoors
C) most indoor plants live from three to five years
D) plants growing indoors need little care
Passage Two
Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:
The immune system is the body's defender. It identifies, tracks down, and destroys troublemakers before they can hurt the body. Those troublemakers may be, for example, bacteria from a cut or splinter, a measles germ, a cold bug, or even a cancer cell.
These invaders try to take over our tissues and feed off our bodies' nutrients. If they succeed, we become sick or, sometimes, even die. It's the job of our immune systems to destroy these invaders before they destroy us.
Say you picked up a flu virus(病毒) last week. Perhaps it entered your body through a cut, from a drinking glass, or from the air you breathe. Of course, you didn't feel it, but the virus made its way into your bloodstream. As soon as it entered your body, it began to reproduce. Viruses have only one goal; to take over your cells. Once inside your body, viruses try to enter cells and disrupt their normal work. If left alone, these viruses would hurt so many cells that you would weaken, or worse, get a serious illness.
But this flu virus should not be so complacent as it seems to be. As it reproduces in your bloodstream, the virus is met by a certain kind of white blood cell, the lymphocytes. The lymphocytes are the foot soldiers that keep you alive.
The number of lymphocytes in your body is hard to imagine. Thousands of them could fit in the period at the end of this sentence. Your body holds about a trillion-—that's 1,000,000,000,000 of them, or about 3,000 in every drop of blood. Since you began reading this sentence, over 800,000 of them have been created and destroyed.
Some of these lymphocytes pass through a small walnut-sized organ called the thymus. The thymus is the base of the neck. Here, special hormones (荷尔蒙) turn lymphocytes into fighting cells, called T cells.
T cells have one terrific talent: They can tell the difference between friend and foe; what should be in our bodies and what shouldn't. They do not affect the body's healthy cells. Yet they attack everything that is foreign to our bodies, such as germs, transplants, and even our own cells which have become abnormal, as in the case of cancer.
16. What is the function of our immune system?
A) To take over our tissues and feed off our body nutrients.
B) To prevent bacteria or germs from entering the body.
C) To destroy the troublemakers in order that they might not hurt the body.
D) To fight against T cells.
17. What does the word

Passage Three
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:
#p#分页标题#e#American sports are quite distinct from those played elsewhere in the world. The top four spectator team sports are American football, baseball, basketball, and ice hockey. Baseball is the oldest among these sports. The professional game dates from 1869 and has no close rivals in popularity until the 1960s; though baseball is no longer the most popular sport, it is still referred to as the national pastime. Little boys play baseball in parks and empty lots, in streets and in alleys; and picnics all through the hot summer months include at least a few innings (回合) of baseball with boys and girls, young and old, taking turns at bat. Probably no American was very surprised to read in the newspapers that when a United States atomic submarine surfaced at the North Pole, the crewmen played a game of baseball.
Also unlike the professional levels of the other popular spectator sports in the U.S., Major League Baseball teams play almost every day from April to October. American football (known simply as “football” in the U.S.) now attracts more television viewers than baseball; however, National Football League teams play only 16 regular-season games each year, so baseball is the great leader in ticket sales. The really important professional players are members of the 24 teams in America’s two major baseball leagues. Each summer they are America’s national heroes. At the end of the season, when the two top teams play against each other to find the winner of the “World Series”, excitement and tension rise in cities all over the country. Fans make long trips to watch the games and to shout from their seats in the bleachers. Millions of others tune in on radio and television, sometimes making it a topic of conversation. And long after it is all over, baseball fans talk over the scores and the players, inning by inning, and the batting averages of the players this year compared to other years. (Batting averages show the percentage of times a player hits the ball effectively.)
The President of the United States is invited to start the season each year by tossing the ball into the first game in Washington D.C. — and he rarely fails to come.
21. What do we know about American baseball from the first paragraph?

C). Because Americans don’t care about the crewmen’s lives.

23. From the second paragraph, we learn that _________.

People today all over the world are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the
problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by the release by man of completely new and often artificial substances into the environment or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance, such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.
#p#分页标题#e#The whole industrial process, which makes many of the goods and machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the environmental balance, or the ecological balance as it is also known. Many of these waste products can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new goods are produced and made more complex, there will be new dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for example, the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more on their land to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being used, in some
cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizers cannot restore the balance.
Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more effort. Pollution and waste is a problem everyone can help to solve by cutting out unnecessary buying, excess consumption and careless disposal of the products we use in our daily lives.
26. What's the cause of the pollution?
27. Some waste products created by the industrial process lead to _______________
28.Of the wastes to be disposed of, the new and dangerous ones are from, for example, _______
29. What's the problem with the land?
30. How can we reduce pollution?

1. The trouble with television is that it discourages concentration. Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort. The dullest, the least gifted of us can achieve things that seem miraculous to those who never concentrates on anything. But television encourages us to apply no effort. It sells us instant gratification. It diverts us only to divert, to make time pass without pain.
2. You and your parents can stop worrying – Pasteur, Edison, Darwin and lots more were far from being geniuses in their teens. History books seldom mention it, but the truth is that many of our greatest figures were practically ―beatniks‖ when they were teenagers. They were given to daydreaming, indecision, and they showed no promise of being doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief.
3. The world was built by men and women whose parents worried that they would ―never amount to a hill of beans‖. You don’t hear too much about their early failure because parents prefer to cite more inspiring examples.

My style is similar to Mussolini. I'm too busy worrying to be fun. Besides, every time I try, I am constantly outdone by my husband.
3. If good friends fell from the sky like raindrops, I'd turn my umbrella upside down and have all that I need. But friends do not come to us that way, instead they shoot up through the ground from a tiny seed of common interest, are cultivated with good times and grow into a beautiful flower to enjoy that continues to bloom as long as it is cared for. 1.What is the significance of life? Is there any gauge to measure it? It would be very difficult, of course, trying to advance an absolute standard. However, the significance of one’s existence can more or less be evaluated by his attitude toward life and work.
2. One of the most important habits in life is to feed your mind with positive mental food. Remember, you are very susceptible to the suggested influences in your environment, whether radio, television, newspapers, magazines, billboards or conversations with other people. Your mind is your most important and precious asset. You must protect it and keep it clean, clear and focused on what you want, rather than allowing it to be polluted by the negative influences around you.
3. To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself and be a sober realist: aware of both one's strength and shortage. You may be courageous to meet challenges, but it should be clear to you where to direct your efforts.

It was being fostered by the changing meal choices of increasingly affluent Chinese, and Government promotion of the health benefits of beef over fatty pork. In 1991, China’s annual consumption of beef per person was just under one kilogram. By 1996 it had grown to 2.94kg and was now 3.5kg.

Passage Two
When you think of monkeys, you probably think of the Tropics. Few species of monkeys venture into temperate lands. Nevertheless, there are one or two notable exceptions.
In the high Atlas Mountains of North Africa, where snowfall is common during the winter, small groups of Barbary apes roam through forests of cedar and oak. One isolated group of these monkeys can be found 200 miles to the north, living on the Rock of Gibraltar, at the southern most tip of Europe.
How do naturalists explain this mystery? Some believe that the monkeys colonized other areas of Europe in the distant past and that those of Gibraltar are the only surviving group. Others think that Arabic or British colonizers brought them to the Rock. Legend has it that the monkeys crossed the narrow straits dividing Europe from Africa by means of a long-lost underground tunnel. Whatever their origin, they are now the only free range monkeys. The Barbary apes inhabit the pine woods that cover the upper part of the Rock. Although they number only a hundred or so, they have become “the peninsula’s most famous resdents,” according to the International Primate Protection League.
Since seven million tourists visit Gibraltar every year, the mischievous monkeys have an ample food supply. Although they feed on wild plants, they have become skilled at begging and occasionally stealing food from visitors. Local authorities also provide the monkeys with fruit and vegetables.
#p#分页标题#e#Apart from feeding, the monkeys spend 20 percent of their day Both male and females monkeys care for and play with the young ones. They live in close knit groups, where stress sometimes leads to confrontation. While the older monkeys use threats and screams to chase away the younger ones, they also have an unusual tooth-chattering behavior that seems to calm them down.
Their arrival on Gibraltar may remain a mystery; still, these sociable monkeys add a special charm to the limestone headland that guards the entrance to the Mediterranean sea. Gibraltar would not be the same without them.

Passage three
Which would you give up: TV, Cell, or Web? From November 6 to December 3, a 1-question online poll was placed on high-traffic websites in 15 countries(Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Gndia, Italy, N etherlands, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Spain, United Kingdom, United States). A total of 150 respondents in each country participated in the poll. In this global survey, 11 of 15 countriessay they’d turn off the TV berfore they’d silence their cell phone or log off the Internet. Women, especially, will give up their favorite shows, voting to do so by a greater percentage than men in all but four countries. “I work 50-plus hours a week, and more importantly, the programs I watch on TV are free on the web.” Paula Kress of Georgia explains why she’d give up on TV.
Younger respondents are more likely to take a pass on television, but older folks don’t necessarily stay stay away from the online experience. In Singapore, not a single person over 45 voted to stop surfing. “I’m not much for sitting in front of the screens, but I need the Internet to keep in touch with friends and family.” Hanna Larna explains why she’d keep the web and ditch TV.
In the United States, people vited to give up TV, yet Americans sit in front of the flat screen for an average of four hours, 37minutes a day. But if the decision had been made by In Canada people voted to give up the cell. The cost effect analysis shows that people there pay some of the highest rates for their cell phone plans, which may be why they have the lowest number of cell users among the western countries polled. “I don’t want to be reachable at every moment.”is another logical explanation.
Why was Brazil the only country to pick the Internet (and by such a huge margin)? Brazil has some of the lowest rates of Internet use worldwide, with just 35 users per 100 people.(The U.S. and U.K. both have 72.) Brazil’s cost to hook up is also high, about $26a month, compared with $7.4in Germany.

B. she doesn’t like sitting in front of screens.
C. she can watch TV programs on the web.
D. she finds online programs more interesting.

Passage four
#p#分页标题#e#Today, world leaders are discussing climates change and what—if anything—can be done to combat global warming. Extreme weather conditions have brought home the fact that our climate is changing—and changing fast. It may be easy to be fatalistic about it, but the truth is that although we humans have caused the problem, we also have the solution. “Think global and act local,”said Friends of the Earth founder David Bower. In many small but important ways we can make a difference. Here are my top tips for how to begin:
Count your food miles. What you eat and where you buy it affects global emissions. Pollution from transport is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide emissions, so it is madness to fly out-of-season vegetables across the world to supermarkets. We should lobby supermarkets for a system of classifying food according to the distance travelled: 0 for local food, 1 for British, 2 for Europe, and 3 for intercontinental.
Turn off anything that winks at you. A video recorder on standby uses almost as much electricity as one playing a tape. Turning down the thermostat by one degree, not leaving TV and music centres on standby, turning off lights, putting lids on cooking pots, and only half-filling kettles can cut energy consumption by 30%, saving your money as well as saving the planet.
Just stop using petrol. Yes you can, and the cr industry may help you. Hydrogen-powered cars are loved by car designers and could become a reality in about 10 years. Meanwhile, consider converting to liquefied petroleum gas(LPG). You won’t be alone: a new pump for this is opening every day. Meanwhile, you can cut down on conventional petrol use just by changing driving habits—no rapid acceleration, lower speeds, keeping tires at the right pressure.
Well, you can always walk. Or cycle. The majority of car journeys are less than five miles and, honestly, once you’ve stepped out, you’ll find it’s really not that bad. The only
energy used is your own and that’s healthy. You only have th look at the collective strength of the people’s fuel lobby to know this maked sense.
These changes will save you money which you should invest in an ethical saving account. They are profitable and they put the pressure on business to clean up its act.
69. In the first paragraph, the author tries to emphasize __________.
A. his concern over climate change
B. his optimism in finding a way out
C. the necessary of global actions
D. the difficulty in reaching an agreement
70. Which conclusion can be drawn from paragraph 2 ?
A. Centralized distribution of food is highly efficient and cost-effective.
B. Organic food from abroad is better than food produced locally.
C. Supermarkets do a great job of offering a wide selection of goods.
D. It’s better for us consumers to shop in local farmers’ markets.
71. In Paragraph 3 the author tries to convey the message that __________.
A. small changes in small habits can make big differences
B. it is not easy for us to reduce energy consumption at home
C. the present way of using energy leaves much to be desired
D. we individuals may not help much in fighting global warming
72. At presen, to replace petrol-driven cars, people may choose cars driven by _______. A, electricity B. LPG C. hydrogen D. biofuel
73. For most of the car journeys, walking or cycling __________.
A. is a waste of time B. is undesirable
C. is a feasible option D. is what people prefer
74. The passage is focused on __________.
A. the passage of climate change on people’s lives
B. the importance of individuals improving the environment
C. the benefits of cutting energy consumption
D. the small ways that can help fight global warming
Passage five
Some years ago, thumping, jumping noises routinely issued from the apartment upstairs as if baby elephants were competing in the 50-year dash. I went up one day to politely inquire. “No, nobady’s making noise here” the husband and wife both insisted. It must be coming from elsewhere in the building.” Two children about five years old, each holding soccer balls, stood right beside their parents. “Could the thumping be your kids running around, perhaps playing soccer?”, I asked. “Oh no, we never let the kids play in the house.”
For monhs, the pattern continued: the thumping and jumping above, our delicate check-in, the denial. It got so that every time I saw the couple, I glared without a word of greeting. When they moved out of the building, the thumping stopped.
I suppose I could have forgiven my neighbors and spared them the glare. After all,
forgiveness is in, a trend advocated by best-selling books, foundations and research institutes. The notion has gone well beyond spiritual leaders advising that forgiveness is good for the soul and that hard feelings will turn us bitter and hostile. Now the medical community cites studies showing that forgiveness can prevent heart attacks, lower blood pressure and even ease depression.
#p#分页标题#e#I may be outnumbered, but I still believe in the healing power of the grudge(不满). I’ve deployed grudges with an equal-opportunity sense of fairness—against teachers and classmates, bosses and colleagues, family and friends. I’ve chosen to stop speaking to certain people permanently and occasionally even spoken ill of them—but more with disbelief than a sense of revenge. I’m neither proud nor ashamed. But I’ve discovered that nothing feels quitea as satisfying as a grudge well nursed.
I’m not against forgiveness itself, I have forgiven people for rudeness as well as for deep misunderstandings and have done so without holding on to hard feelings. What I deplore is the propaganda about forgiveness. No longer an option, forgivensess is an official order. Forgiving so democratically cheapens the very act.
A long standing grudge suggests that we hold certain standards, that we respect ourselves enough to reject bad behavior. Failure to forgive can be just as righteous, just as honorable as forgiveness itself.
75. The author would probably describe the neighbors as __________.
A. careless B. dishonest C. ignorant D. immodest
76. Paragraph 3 is focused on __________.
A. how forgiveness is good for us spiritually and physically
B. how forgiveness has become a fashionable concept
C. what has changed people’s understanding of forgiveness
D. what is the true meaning and virtue of forgiveness
77. By “I may be outnumbered”(Para. 4), the author means that most people in her situation would probably __________.
A. tell people how bad the neighbors are
B. refuse to speak to the neighbors
C. try to practice forgiveness to the neighbors
D. ask the neighbors for an explanation
78. The author seems _________ what she always does with grudges.
A. ashamed of B. proud of C. satisfied with D. disappointed with
79. It can be learned that the author __________.
A. has great difficulty forgiving people
B. regrets failing to practice forgiveness
C. wants to learn how to forgive people
D. opposes “forgiveness without principle”
80. The best title for the passage is __________.
A. To Forgive is God B. The Right Not to Forgive

“翻两番”的英文是quadruple(字典的解释是increase fourfold),
2. …making sb. difficult / impossible to do sth.
5. “很可能”不能翻译成…is probable to do sth.或is quite possible to do sth.,建议多扣分。
6. “对„„采取行动”常用介词about,不宜用with或for。此外,…can do nothing…but to

There are many complaints about the inaccessibility of medical care and high tuitions. However, another thing that
deserves attention is the difficulty of college graduates in getting employed. Those with master’s degrees can no longer find a job as easily as they did ten years ago. Because of the increasingly intense competition for a position, academic excellence and proficient expertise will not necessarily be translated into an ideal job. Education authorities have been seeking ways to create more opportunities of employment.

This act is intended (aims) to introduce education reform in America’s elementary and secondary schools and give all children the access to high-quality education. The ultimate goal is to ensure that no one is left behind. As a result of the
implementation of this act, schools enjoy more flexibility to use resources where they are needed most. Parents can get more involved in the child’s education.

According to the latest statistics, 67percent of the U.S. Population have access to the Internet, a percentage six times that of China(as large as China's).

Part II Reading Comprehension (40%)
Section A
Directions: There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or
unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C)
and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on
the Answer Sheet.(30%)
Passage One
Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:
Opinion poll surveys show that the public see scientists in a rather unflattering light.
Commonly, the scientist is also seen as being male. It is true that most scientists are male, but the picture of science as a male activity may be a major reason why fewer girls than boys opt for science, except when it comes to biology, which is seen as “female”.
The image most people have of science and scientists comes from their own experience of school science, and from the mass media. Science teachers themselves see it as a problem that so many school pupils find school science an unsatisfying experience, though over the last few years more and more pupils, including girls, have opted for science subjects.
In spite of excellent documentaries, and some good popular science magazines, scientific stories in the media still usually alternate between miracle and scientific threat. The popular stereotype of science is like the magic of fairy tales: it has potential for enormous good or awful harm. Popular fiction is full of “good” scientists saving the world, and “mad” scientists trying to destroy it.
From all the many scientific stories which might be given media treatment, those which are chosen are usually those which can be framed in terms of the usual news angles: novelty, threat, conflict or the bizarre. The routine and often tedious work of the scientist slips from view, to be replaced with a picture of scientists forever offending public moral sensibilities (as in embryo research), threatening public health (as in weapons research), or fighting it out with each other (in giving evidence at public enquiries such as those held on the issues connected with nuclear power).
The mass media also tends to over-personalize scientific work, depicting it as the product of
individual genius, while neglecting the social organization which makes scientific work possible.
A further effect of this is that science comes to be seen as a thing in itself: a kind of unpredictable force; a tide of scientific progress.
#p#分页标题#e#It is no such thing, of course. Science is what scientists do; what they do is what a particular kind of society facilitates, and what is done with their work depends very much on who has the power to turn their discoveries into technology, and what their interests are.
11. According to the passage, ordinary people have a poor opinion of science and scientists partly because ____________.
A)of the misleading of the media
B). opinion polls are unflattering
C). scientists are shown negatively in the media
D). science is considered to be dangerous
12. Fewer girls than boys study science because ______________.
A). they think that science is too difficult
B). they are often unsuccessful in science at school
C). science is seen as a man's job
D). science is considered to be tedious
13. Media treatment of science tends to concentrate on ____________.
A). the routine, everyday work of scientists
B). discoveries that the public will understand
C). the more sensational aspects of science
D). the satisfactions of scientific work
14. According to the author, over-personalization of scientific work will lead science __________
A). isolation from the rest of the world
B). improvements on school system
C). association with "femaleness"
D). trouble in recruiting young talent
15. According to the author, what a scientist does ____________.
A). should be attributed to his individual genius
B). depends on the coordination of the society
C). shows his independent power
D). is unpredictable
Passage Two
Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:
The magnitude 7.9 quake struck Sichuan province on May 12 at around noontime, which may have increased the human death toll because many people were at school, and the school buildings turned out to be especially vulnerable to collapse because of poor construction. More than 69,000 people have been confirmed dead so far, and more than 374,000 injured, with fears of further casualties because several lakes were created by rockfall dams may give way and cause sudden flooding.
Clark Burchfiel, Schlumberger Professor of Geology, and Leigh Royden, professor of geology and geophysics in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT, have been doing extensive research in that region of China and the Tibetan plateau for more than two decades, but had found no hints that suggested such a large earthquake might strike the area. The team operated an array of 25 broadband seismograph stations in this region of western Sichuan for more than a year. “Nobody was thinking there would be a major earthquake in that area,” Royden says. “This earthquake was quite unusual, and may have involved a simultaneously severe break of two separate but neighboring faults (断层),” she continued.
The region is extremely unusual geologically, Royden says, because of the very steep slopes at the boundary between the Sichuan Basin to the east and the Tibetan plateau to the west. The elevation rises sharply by about 3,500 meters (more than two miles) over a span of only about 50 kilometers (about 30 miles).
The area where the quake occurred is part of the boundary between two of the Earth’s structural plates, where the Indian and Asian plates meet in an ongoing collision that has created the Himalayan Mountains and the Tibetan plateau. But in central and eastern Tibet, unlike most other areas of continental collision, much of the movement of crust is hidden from view. Instead of thickening the entire crust by folding and faulting, the surface of the eastern Tibetan plateau is not deformed and is being lifted upward by thickening of a weak crustal layer more than 15 km below the surface.
16. Why did the school buildings collapse in the earthquake, according to the passage?
A). They were crowded with students and teachers.
B). They were poorly built.
C). They had too long a history.
D). They were damaged by the earthquake.
17. Based on Para. 1, why does the writer think that more people will be killed or injured after the earthquake?
A). Because there will be more aftershocks after the major quake.
B). Because more school buildings will collapse after the quake.
C). Because destructive flooding caused by rockfall dams is likely to occur.
D). Because there was not enough medical care for the injured in the area.
18. What can we infer from this passage?
A). There was no prediction that such a large-scale quake might occur there.
B). Researchers had done little research in that area before the earthquake struck it.
C). The 5.12 earthquake was the most destructive in the world.
D). If more research had been done, the destruction could have been avoided.
19. Which of the following can be inferred from this passage?
A). Earthquakes can never be predicted.
B). Earthquakes occur frequently.
C). Earthquakes are difficult to predict.
D). Earthquakes can be avoided.
20. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A) The 5.12 earthquake caused great causalities.
B) The 5.12 earthquake was very frightening.
C) The causes of the earthquake are still unclear.
D) The 5.12 earthquake was extremely unusual.
Passage Three
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:
#p#分页标题#e#Four months before Crown Prince Felipe says “si” (“yes” in Spanish) to television journalist Shops are offering the biggest variety of wedding souvenirs, from plates and bottle-openers to copies of the couple’s engagement ring.
The couple has made only a few carefully staged public appearances to reduce the scrutiny. Spanish people waited for more than a decade for the 36-year-old son of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia to find a suitable bride. And more important, the May 22 wedding will be a landmark event in other ways.
Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, 31, is the daughter of a nurse and a journalist. So, she will be the
first commoner on a throne once occupied by Queen Isabella, who sent Christopher Columbus to the Americas.
The pretty, elegant former news anchor will also become Spain’s first home-grown queen in more than a century. The lively and professionally accomplished Letizia has been welcomed by Spanish people as a new type of queen for a modern monarchy.
Spanish people were accustomed to seeing her in television news broadcasts and she arouses tremendous curiosity. Journalists are investigating even the most ordinary aspects of her past which resembles that of so many other young Spanish professional women. Spanish people have also taken note that she tried to interrupt the prince when they talked to the press after getting engaged in November. “Let me talk,” she told the heir to the Bourbon throne.
Such behavior is regarded as understandable in a woman who went to Mexico by herself at age 23 and later reported on the September 11 terrorist attacks and the Iraq war for state television TVE.
Her strong character, frankness and critical mind could also be disadvantages for a royal who is rarely expected to speak her mind, reporters have said.
The palace has struggled to protect her from scrutiny and to give her time to adapt to her new role.

The story you are about to read is almost unbelieve, but it is true. It happened one winter’s
night in 1944, during World War II. The airplannes of the Royal Air Force, after dropping their bombs on Germany, were on their way home.
In each plane, men looked anxiously over their guns into the darkness. This was the time when enemy fighter planes might attack. One of the air-gunners was Nick Alkemade. He was a gunner in the back of the plane and he sat in the rear-gun position, at the very tail of the plane. It was so small that before climbing in , Nick had taken off his parachute and left it in another part of the plane. He felt more comfortable without it . Soon, however, he began to feel very uncomfortable indeed. Suddenly there was a terrible exploision and the whole aircraft shook. The whole of the middle part of the plane burst into flames and Nick heard the captain shook. “We’re on fire! Jump!”
At first Nick could not get out of his seat. The tiny door was stuck. After struggling with all his strength for several moments, he forced it open. He looked for his parachute but it was already burning. He had to make a terrible decision: he could stay in the plane and be burnt to death or he could jump without a parachute and be smashed to death, after falling 6,000 metre. He jumped!
#p#分页标题#e#The cold air hit him and he could not breath. At this height the air is too thin to breathe properly. As Nick began to lose consciousness, he thought, “So this is what it’s like to die.” Then he remembered no more.
When he woke up some time later, he could not believe that he was alive. Slowly he moved his arms, then his legs. They seemed all right. He was lying in a huge pile of snow. When he looked up, he saw a large fir tree. Its branches had broken his fall and the pile of snow had completed his soft landing.
When he got to his feet, he found that his back and one leg hurt but he was able to walk. He made his way to a German farm, and soon he was a prisoner, in a hospital bed. At first the German did not believe his story. Later, however, they found the crashed plane and his partly burnt parachute, with his name and number on it. This was the first time a man had jumped five and half kilometres without a parachute and still lived.
26. Why did Nick take off his parachute?
27. What happened in the plane when the plane burst into flames?
28. What did Nick have to decide to do when the plane burst into flames?
29. Nick was saved by ____________
30. Why didn’t the Germans believe his story at first?

ramifications will be at least as profound as the economic ones. Will all those seniors shift the balance of political power? How will Hollywood executives, funeral directors and the auto industry change their products to meet the demands of a markedly older public? Because women tend to outlive men, will an older America also be significantly more female? In short, what will America be like when we all become a Senior Nation'?
Anyone who has visited West Palm Beach or Tucson knows part of the answer, lots of people driving very slowly in big cars on their way to early-bird dinners. But that's only the most broad-brush observation. The political changes alone will be enough to bury all those stereotypes about the feeble elderly. Peterson estimates that by 2038, people 65 and older will make up 34 percent of the electorate - up from only 16 percent in 1966. You think Social Security is a sacred cow now? And the battle over entitlements may get uglier. The 65-plus population is about 85 percent white. The younger generations - the ones footing the seniors' bills - are much more racially mixed.

Passage 2
Weary after centuries of fighting the surging North Sea from gushing into this low-lying nation, the Netherlands is rethinking how to keep Dutch feet dry.
The traditional method of stopping floodwater has been to build dikes. But at the Second World Water Forum, a five-day conference that was to start today in The Hague, Dutch water experts were to explain that the best way to handle the water may be to let it in.
In the Netherlands -- half of which lies below sea level -- the Ministry of Water Management has designated several low-lying regions as
Referring to the fable of a Dutch boy named Hans Brinker who saved the nation from disaster by plugging a hole in the sea barrier. Undersecretary for Water Management Monique de Vries said:
#p#分页标题#e#Although the country has built dikes and reclaimed land since the Middle Ages, repeated flooding of farmland in recent years and high maintenance costs have led to a rethinking about the old methods.
Part of the plan involves widening river beds to allow larger volumes of water to flow to the sea. Although it is still unclear how much land could eventually be allocated to the project-- some inhabitants would have to be relocated w large areas of the eastern Dutch province of Gelderland have been labeled as suitable.
While flooding is a serious threat to the Dutch, global warming could expose many more in this country of 15 million to drought and water pollution if governments do not take drastic measures, conference organizers have warned.
More than3,500 delegates from 150 countries will attend the conference, the follow-up to the first global water congress, Which was held in Marrakech. Morocco, two years ago.
With one-sixth of the world's population lacking clean drinking water, forum organizers have called for annual global spending on water problems to be more than doubled from about $70 billion or $80 billion to $180 billion. Berkeley Lab has been involved in the project since 1995 through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, developing the market transformation program based on the success of the first
phase of the project, which involved designing and testing CFC (chlorofluorocabon 含氯氟烃) free, energy efficient refrigerators. Fridley says that beyond his technical supervisory role, the Laboratory will be involved in training and working with the State Bureau of Technical Supervision as the new efficiency standards are developed.

Passage 4
#p#分页标题#e#By the mid-nineteenth century', in addition to its natural resources, the United States had accumulated enough capital in the form of factories to productively employ a large amount of labor, or human resources. A nation that still consisted largely of independent farmers could not provide an adequate labor supply for heavy industrialization. But millions of new workers came to the United States from abroad.
As we are all aware, not all these workers arrived voluntarily. Slaves were brought from Africa to the South: they were put to work on plantations to extract maximum harvests from the cotton fields. But in the North, the machines that turned that cotton into textiles were worked by massive waves of immigrants who came willingly from one part of Europe after another. This vastly expanded pool of labor allowed from large leaps in our national output.
A nation cannot grow forever by finding more natural resources and attracting more workers; thus, a country's extensive growth will eventually slow. But intensive growth gradually appears as better use is made of the labor force. In the United States in the mid-nineteen century, many of the newly arrived immigrants were unskilled and illiterate, but the education policy of their new land meant that their children all received an education, and many were trained in a skill. If a society gives workers more knowledge, they will be able to use machines in a more complex way and to follow more complex instructions, yielding manufactured goods of greater value; this process is often known as investing in human capital. In the late twentieth century, our physical capital is so abundant and our natural resources so limited that we are beginning to appreciate the importance of improving our human resources if we are to continue to grow.
66. This passage mainly discusses the national output in terms of____________.
A. the labor force B. natural resources
C. factories D. immigration

Passage 5
Economists have received the unfair reputation of being unable to agree on anything. The image of economists in disagreement is part of our folklore. An English commentator wrote:
The image of widespread disagreement among economists is overrated. The result of a survey of 100 professional economists confirm that there is considerable agreement among economists about what can be done (positive economics), especially in a microeconomic context. However, there is more disagreement over what ought
#p#分页标题#e#to be done. Questions of what ought to be done (Should we equalize the distribution of income? Should we increase defense spending?) require moral and political value judgments on which individuals naturally differ. Finally, disagreement among professional economists receives more publicity than other scientific professions, which contributes to the false image of economists in disaccord.
While disagreements in other sciences are as strong or even stronger than in economics, these disagreements are less visible to the public eye. Theoretical physicists have disagreed about the physical nature of the universe since the foundations of physics, but this scientific controversy is understood by only a few theoretical physicists.
It does not require much disagreement to bring disputes to the public's attention. Everyone is interested in economic questions: Will inflation accelerate? Will I lose my job? Why is the price of gasoline rising so fast? Why are home mortgages so hard to come by? Economists do disagree, particularly on some big macroeconomic issues. But often what the public perceives as disagreements over positive economics are really disagreements over what ought to be. In general, there is more agreement than disagreement among economists.
73. According to the passage, the commentator mentions Mr. Keynes as noted for his____________.
A. good sense
B. inconsistency of opinions
C. predictability
D. greediness
74. According to the passage, positive economics is__________.
A. an attempt to convince disgruntled economists

C. The public follows them intently.
D. They are not worthy of publication.

A. badly advertised
B. difficult to obtain
C. far away
D. plentiful
78. It can be inferred from the passage that economists find macroeconomic issues _________.
A. more controversial than microeconomic issues
B. easier to understand than positive economics
C. similar to issues in theoretical physics
D. not concerned with reality
79. The purpose of the author in this passage is to__________________.
